Who Needs Nutritional Optometry?

More and more, eye doctors, optometrists and ophthalmologists, are urging patients to practice preventive nutrition and life-style strategies to keep their eyes healthy and to enhance their use of vision. We at Nutritional Optometry Associates (NOA) have made it our specialty to be alert to evaluate the new well-done studies reported in highly respected peer-reviewed journals. Beyond this awareness, we at NOA have become recognized for our leadership and involvement in ocular nutrition research and “Integrative Therapy” in the prevention and reversal of eye and vision disorders.

In “Integrative Therapy,” we use nutritional therapy and intelligent eye care based on comprehensive eye and vision examinations, natural principles and good science. Integrative therapy can tremendously help make most medical therapies either more effective or less necessary.

In the final analysis, optometrists and ophthalmologists need nutritional optometry/ophthalmology, and as new well-done studies reported in highly respected peer-review journals, practitioners are passing on to patients the new information. More and more, eye doctors, optometrists and ophthalmologists, are learning how to counsel their patients as to prudent dietary behavior. When the prudent behavior utilizes natural, non-invasive methods with minimal expense and minimal hazard, it becomes prudent to recommend and monitor these strategies, at least for persons at imminent risk.

Those of us who are concerned to prevent adverse refractive change (such as increasing nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism) need to benefit from nutritional counseling advice and ergonometric advice to reduce the risk factors that tend to promote the adverse changes. Many of those of us who wear contact lenses or who suffer from dry eyes can benefit more from the best dietary advice than from eye drops!

Many glaucoma victims are consuming common foods that tend to elevate intraocular pressure and worsen the glaucoma effects!

At last! Teaching ocular nutrition has come of age in Medical Schools and Optometric Colleges in the great Universities of the US and throughout the world.
